What German assessors watch in group discussions

In many German graduate Assessment-Center formats, the Gruppendiskussion is less about winning the argument and more about how you help the group reach a usable outcome while remaining visible as an individual contributor.

Cooperation without disappearance

Assessors often track whether you build on others’ points, summarise when the room fragments, and credit ideas that were not yours. Candidates who only wait for a perfect opening can look passive even when they later deliver a strong recommendation.

Structure under noise

Strong performers name a short agenda early — criteria, time check, decision rule — then return to it when the conversation loops. That habit is easier to practise in a warm-up than to invent under observation.

Respectful challenge

Disagreement scored well is specific: you reference a constraint in the brief, propose an alternative, and invite a reaction. Personal put-downs and sarcasm are easy to mark negatively on observation sheets used in Traineeprogramme centres.
