STAR stories that fit trainee competencies

Building examples from internships and student projects that map cleanly onto dimensions like Gestaltungskraft and Kundenorientierung.

Notebook with handwritten preparation notes

Competency interviews in German trainee selection often map onto dimensions with labels such as Gestaltungskraft, Teamfähigkeit, Kundenorientierung, or analytisches Denkvermögen. Your examples need to land on those dimensions without sounding like a memorised script.

Mine studies and side work

Assessors expect early-career candidates to draw on university projects, Werkstudent roles, and internships. A thin story becomes stronger when you name the constraint (deadline, conflicting stakeholders, incomplete data) and your concrete action — not only the happy ending.

One story, multiple angles

Keep a bank of six to eight situations. Rehearse how the same internship conflict can illustrate cooperation in one answer and drive in another, without recycling identical sentences. Probing follow-ups are normal; flat rehearsed monologues break when the interviewer asks “what would you do differently?”

Language choice

If the centre runs in German, practise the stories in German even if you draft them in English first. Dimension labels and verbs used by HR often do not translate one-to-one.

Our Competency Interview Coaching package is built around this inventory work.
